Building an “identity ecosystem”

The White House’s Cybersecurity Coordinator, Howard Schmidt, coined the “identity ecosystem” term in discussing the government’s intimation that they will be giving every American their very own Internet ID in the coming months. Great, you might say, if I had my own ID that worked across the web, I wouldn’t have to memorize any more passwords…it would be so easy! I prefer to see it as a little stifling/unnerving. The thought of the government having that much control over our online activity? It was getting bad enough with all these corporations and advertisers tracking our browsers; I’m not sure that I need my government analyzing my sudoku addiction. I’m not comfortable with this new form of ecosystem, neither the concept nor its title. And, as it turns out, I’m not alone. Here’s a good article on the topic to check out: http://www.marketingpilgrim.com/2011/01/would-government-issued-internet-id-hamper-online-commerce.html
